The margarita is a favourite in the world of cocktails, and for good reason. Not only is it simple; its original form was just three ingredients, it also is a perfect balance between sour, salty and tequila goodness. Plus, it follows the same basic formula as a traditional tequila shot, and who doesn’t love one of those on a hot day (or night)? Being such a traditional cocktail, we at Crafty’s thought it was only right to devote our September box, Margaritaville, to this fantastic concoction and all the flavours that complement its simple palette.
Like most classic cocktails, its origins are a bit hazy as no one knows for sure how it first came about, but the most compelling story involves Carlos ‘Danny’ Herrera who tended bar at Rancho la Gloria in Tijuana in 1938. While trying to please a guest who was allergic to all other forms of alcohol, he saw others at the bar taking shots of tequila with salt to start and a fresh lime to finish. It only made sense for him to put the two liquid ingredients in a shaker and pour them into a salt rimmed glass, creating a cocktail that not only utilized the traditional way for one to do a tequila shot, Mexico’s national spirit, but also allowed for a sipable cocktail that didn’t include all the messy aftermath of a shot (or many shots).
While there are other stories of its origin, the fact remains that this cocktail soon became a favourite in Mexico and quickly made its way into cocktail bars around the world. With some tweaking and tuning by various formidable bartenders, the margarita soon became the cocktail we know and love today. While every bar and bartender has their own little adjustments, most modern recipes include some combination of tequila, triple sec, lime juice, agave or simple syrup, and, of course, salt. Because of its simplicity, it is a perfect canvas on which to add other refreshing or even complex ingredients, with innumerable combinations available today all across the world.
Because of its ability to take on a plethora of flavours, we had a lot to choose from, but when our list was finalized, we had a fantastic array of products which bring a ton of amazing flavours to this iconic cocktail. Ingredients like Prosyro Watermelon syrup, Blue Monkey 100% Watermelon juice, black tapioca and 24k Smoked Sea Salt, which make up the Watermel-garita, Green Goblin syrup, Scrappy’s Celery bitters, jalapeno and cumin salt, which comprise the Duende Verde Margarita, or Modern Cuisine Mint syrup, white pepper, Mint-infused mezcal, cucumber and mint salt, which are all found in the Primer Hola Margarita.
Needless to say, this box is stocked up with some amazing ingredients which are sure to elevate anyone’s at home margarita game. So get out your salt-rimming plate, your shaker, tons of ice, maybe a beach chair or two, and concoct some fantastic margaritas with the recipes found in this month’s Crafty Cocktails box, Margaritaville. Because before you know it, summer will be over, and margaritas are just not the same in the winter. Salud!
